YEAR 5 | HYBRID INTERNATIONAL COURSE | STRATE DESIGN x KOOKMIN UNIVERSITY
It was an honour to be appointed Visiting Lecturer [intervenant] at Strate Design Lyon after years of collaboration with international design schools including ECV Lille, ECV Aix-en-Provence, ECV Bordeaux, and MICA Baltimore – delivering workshops, masterclasses, and remote courses in visual communication and experimental design.
___ On this occasion, Tomi Vollauschek of FL@33 led the inaugural Hybrid Year 5 Strate × Kookmin (Seoul) Interdisciplinary Design Course with his specially developed syllabus.
___ The cross-cultural project invited students to explore how French and Korean design perspectives can inform contemporary visual and material practices. Through a combination of conceptual thinking, cultural empathy, and hands-on experimentation, participants investigated flexible multi-disciplinary approaches connecting identity, craft, and product innovation.
___ The course was delivered in English, with students welcome to present in either French or English – and yes, a bit of Franglais added to the charm of this particularly international course.
THE POWER OF THREE AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS | LYON x SEOUL
Students were encouraged to experiment and explore ideas for concepts, products, or services, as well as aspects of visual identity systems – keeping the newly introduced Power of Three guideline in mind. This approach emphasises finding a balance between Head, Heart, and Hand – Intellect, Emotion, and Skill – while also considering the course's multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary, and multi-cultural perspectives.
___ The resulting projects spanned a wide range of interests and explorations, including shape-shifting translation tools, customisable bags, lamps, a patchwork fabric wrap for baguettes, an identity for an olive oil brand, and several fashion items.
FliP | A modular French-Hangul shape-shifting language-learning system | Jogakbo Baguette Wrap | An Exploration of Korean Patchwork for a Reusable Fabric Baguette Wrap | Jeong Bags | A bag customisation site with oversized obangsaek-inspired knot handles Olivea | Identity for a speculative family-owned olive business branching out | Lamp | An exploration into minimalist lampshades revealing intricate paper textures when lit | Noori | Patchwork-inspired fabric lampshade structure celebrating shadow play and texture | Harmok | An exploration in the experimental fusion fashion
