FL@33 GOES AMERICA – WORKSHOP AND PUBLIC LECTURE
Tomi Vollauschek FL@33 residency, March 9th–14th, 2013. Kindly invited by program director Whitney Sherman – FL@33's Tomi Vollauschek was designer in residence in the MFA in Illustration Practice program (MFA ILP) at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, MD, USA. He gave a lecture based on FL@33's The 3D Type Book and ran a 3-day workshop inspired by FL@33's book Made & Sold.
___ The Made & Sold workshop was entitled Creating visuals for a product range.
___ The public lecture at MICA took place on Wednesday, March 13th at 7pm, followed by a booksigning. The lecture was called ABCDimensional: an in-depth look at selected projects from The 3D Type Book. Location: MICA, Brown Center, Falvey Hall, 1301 W. Mount Royal Avenue, Baltimore, MD, USA. Made possible through the support of the Mixed Media Lecture Series.
___ See MICA's official announcement in Juxtaposition magazine here.

MADE & SOLD WORKSHOP
Workshop title: Creating visuals for a product range. Aim: The aim of this workshop is to develop skills of thinking beyond the edges of a sheet of paper, to create variations of a theme and to feel encouraged to use different techniques and canvases for your artworks. Participating students, MICA MFA ILP, first year Master Class in Illustration Practice: Alexandra Citrin, Diyou Wu, Eduardo Corral, Joshua C Heinsz, Kevin Valente, Lisk Feng, Lynn Chen, Maily Degnan, Sarah Jacoby, Seo Kim, Stacey Montebello, Valeria Molinari.
___ Also shown here: workshop documentation including various work in progress snapshots, mock-ups and final pieces. Pictures shown with kind permission of the workshop participants.
MICA (MFA ILP) BUTTON BADGE SERIES
Twelve black and white button badge sets of four were released by Stereohype in July 2013. The 48 button badge gems were the result of the Made & Sold workshop day 2 assignment. The 48 button badge gems are available separately and as sets of four with Stereohype's swing-tag packaging.

MADE & SOLD WORKSHOP DAY 1 (and possibly a bit of day 2) – ARTWORK FOR PRINT
Please select a piece from the book Made & Sold: Toys, T-Shirts, Prints, Zines and Other Stuff and try to find inspiration by your selection's concept, its form or the colour scheme.
___ Take this as a starting point to create your own piece – that must not obviously resemble your inspiration. It's about making it your own.
___ Please feel free to let your style and personality shine through.
___ Using at least four different colours please create a fairly detailed visual that you would be proud of seeing framed on your best friend's wall. This illustration should be planned for – at least – as a letter size reproduction (8.5in x 11in). Something that would make a beautiful limited edition...
___ How you get there is up to you.
___ If you happen to have a very detailed, time-consuming illustration-style you may want to start early to get your visual ready within one and a half days – while others may very well go through a series of experiments and sketches first – and go from there.
___ Final presentation: one single visual – inkjet/colour laser print or the original illustration. Any other printing techniques you may have access to are of course also fine.

MADE & SOLD WORKSHOP DAY 2 – MODIFYING THE ARTWORK FOR BUTTON BADGE PIN SET
Once the main visual is ready (or rather as ready as you managed to get it) you are asked to make a set of 4 black and white, themed 1 inch (25mm) button badges based on your artwork.
The 4 button badges could feature meaningful and/or intriguing details and/or be a further abstraction of your artwork.
___ If you want to add a humorous, witty and/or narrative aspect to your series – now is a good a moment.
___ The reduction of colour will obviously affect how your initial artwork will be featured on the button badges.
___ The extremely small space available on a button badge (or 'mobile canvas' as we tend to call them sometimes) is a real challenge.
___ The resulting button badge designs should not be considered mere compromises however – but shine on their own – be stand-alone additions to the product range you are working on.
___ Please refer to the provided design template for guidance (attached). A Photoshop template can be downloaded here (please see 'Templates' halftone/greyscale 900dpi)
___ Final presentation should be a black and white print or the original illustration. A packaging for the button badge set is not required – but if you feel like creating one anyway – using aspects of your visual... Great. I brought a few samples with me to look at...

MADE & SOLD WORKSHOP DAY 3 – MODIFYING THE ARTWORK FOR A FREE CHOICE PRODUCT
Choose material, printing technique and medium of your choice and decide which product should also carry a version of your artwork and complete your range (anything you want – ie T-shirt, Tote bag, etc).
___ Please visualize your concept by any means and present the product (or preview visuals of it) from at least two different angles. Please bear in mind that your artwork might very well have to be modified to suit your selected product.
___ Final presentation should be an inkjet/colour laser print or the original illustration.
